Sukamade Beach or better known as Penyu Beach, why is it called Penyu Beach? because here there is a breeding place or sanctuary for turtles, from the process of taking eggs from nests located on the beach and then moving to a safe hatching area until the release of baby turtles to the high seas.
Located between two regions, namely Jember and Banyuwangi District, East Java Province or more precisely in Meru Betiri National Park.
Meru Betiri National Park began to become a National Park since 1982 by the Minister of Agriculture at that time with an area of around 58,000 ha.
The name of this national park is taken from the name of the highest mountain in the area, namely Mount Betiri 1,223 meters above sea level.
To go to the beach is indeed not easy, because the road inside the National Park is not paved especially when the rainy season arrives, the muddy road is waiting for you.
It is not possible for us to use private vehicles, better or we suggest you rent a Jeep type car that is around Banyuwangi or Jember. Many Jeep communities in this area are indeed ready to serve tourists who want to visit Sukamade.
Along the way to Sukamade, we can visit several interesting places, including: “Pulau Merah Beach” “Pantai Rajegwesi“, “Pantai Teluk Hijau“, “Chocolate Plantation“, “Home industry for making coconut sugar” and others.
To visit Sukamade, it’s not enough just one day, because if we want to enjoy all the attractions, we have to stay in the Sukamadearea.
One of the interesting attractions in Sukamade that we should not miss is hunting turtle eggs in the coastal area at night with the local ranger.
We hunt sea turtle eggs not to eat !!! Ha ha ha…
We will put these eggs in an area that is safe to hatch.
In the Sukamade beach area there are two inns, namely the “Wisma Kebun” homestay managed by a private plantation company and the other one is the “Wisma Pantai” homestay managed by the Meru Betiri National Park itself.
After we stay at a local inn and will check out, there is still one interesting attraction that we should not miss, namely releasing baby turtles into the open sea.
This activity is better for us to do in the morning, to avoid predators who will hunt the turtle babies. A beautiful sight when we see turtle babies walking towards the sea and swimming.
Sukamade Beach itself is a very beautiful beach with a coastline that is quite long, clean, big waves due to facing the Indian Ocean. Unfortunately, tourists are not allowed to swim on the beach.
Come on … !!! What are you waiting for?
